Why We Sometimes Tell Patients Not to Travel

It probably reads oddly on a page written by a clinic that treats international patients, but a meaningful number of the people who contact us are told that travelling here is not their best option.

When the case is too small

A single crown or one implant does not generate a saving that justifies international flights and time off work. If that is what you need, have it done at home.

The economics only really work on multi-unit and full-arch cases, and we would rather say so than sell you a trip.

When the timeline does not fit

Some treatment genuinely cannot be compressed. If you need grafting and then integration, you are looking at months, and that means two trips.

If your circumstances allow only one short visit and the case needs more, the honest answer is that this is the wrong plan, not that we will find a way.

When something needs handling locally first

Active periodontal disease, an untreated infection, or medical conditions that need stabilising should be dealt with by someone who can see you repeatedly over weeks. Starting that here and finishing it four thousand miles away is not sensible.

When it is clearly not what you actually want

Occasionally someone describes a result they want that would require removing healthy teeth. The right answer there is no, wherever they are treated.

We would rather lose the case than do it.

A clinic that never tells anyone no is not exercising clinical judgement, it is processing enquiries. It is worth noticing which one you are dealing with.

If you want to know how this would apply to your smile, book a remote consultation with us.
