What Continuing Education Actually Tells You About a Clinic

Continuing education appears prominently in practice marketing, and the volume of courses cited is frequently presented as evidence of quality. The relationship is less direct than that presentation implies.

Considerable variation in what qualifies

The category encompasses multi-year structured programmes with assessed clinical components at one extreme, and single-day manufacturer-sponsored product presentations at the other.

A list of course titles conveys little without reference to duration, format and whether clinical competence was assessed.

What is informative

Training pursued in a defined direction over time, rather than an accumulation across unrelated fields. Programmes affiliated with universities or recognised professional bodies. Participation in structured study groups where cases are presented for peer criticism.

Case presentation before peers is a more demanding test than course attendance, since it exposes work to informed criticism rather than confirming it.

Sponsorship and its implications

Manufacturer-funded education is widespread and not inherently problematic, but it is unavoidably oriented toward particular products. Its presence alongside independently funded training is unremarkable; its presence alone is worth noting.

The more useful enquiry

Rather than asking what courses have been attended, ask how the practitioner evaluates their own outcomes: whether cases are reviewed at defined intervals, whether failures are documented, and what has changed in their protocol over the past five years.

A practitioner who can answer that specifically is demonstrating something a certificate cannot.

Continuing education is a necessary condition of contemporary practice and a weak signal of quality in isolation. Systematic self-assessment is the stronger indicator.
