Whether treatment is completed within a single visit or divided between two is determined by biology rather than preference, and the distinction should be established before travel is arranged.
Treatment completable in one visit
Aesthetic restorative treatment on sound teeth, comprising assessment, design, aesthetic try-in, preparation, provisionalisation and definitive cementation, is completed within seven to ten days.
Single restorations, replacement of existing crowns, and treatment not involving surgical healing fall within the same category.
Treatment necessarily requiring two visits
Implant treatment requires an integration period of three to six months between placement and definitive restoration. This interval is biological and cannot be shortened by scheduling.
Where bone augmentation precedes implant placement, a maturation period of four to nine months applies additionally, in some cases indicating a third visit.
The intermediate case
Immediate loading permits a fixed provisional prosthesis to be delivered during the first visit, with the definitive prosthesis fabricated during the second. The patient is therefore not without fixed teeth during the interval.
This is frequently presented as single-visit treatment. It is more accurately described as two visits with fixed provisionalisation throughout.
Planning implications
The number of visits, their duration and the interval between them should be specified in the written plan before flights are booked. Where the number of visits is uncertain pending imaging, this should be stated rather than resolved by assumption.
Treatment duration should be established from the clinical sequence and communicated in advance. Schedules constructed to fit a predetermined travel window invert that order.
