Patients researching treatment abroad usually end up comparing the same handful of countries. Here is a fair account, including where Colombia is not the obvious answer.
Mexico
Closest for most North Americans, cheapest to reach, and border towns make short trips practical. Enormous range in quality, from excellent to alarming, because the volume of clinics is so high.
Best suited to patients who want to drive or take a short flight and can return easily for adjustments. That ease of return is a genuine clinical advantage and should not be underrated.
Turkey
Very aggressive pricing, high volume, and heavily marketed packages. Some superb clinics and a significant amount of hard-sell operating on compressed timelines.
The commonest complaint from the region is over-treatment: patients arriving needing a few units and leaving with twenty crowns. That is a marketing pattern rather than a national characteristic, but it is well documented.
Costa Rica
Well-established, English widely spoken, strong record with North American patients. Prices generally higher than Colombia or Mexico while remaining well below the US.
Often the choice for patients who prioritise ease and familiarity over maximum saving.
Colombia
Strong specialist training, university-affiliated practices, and Bogota specifically has the widest selection of specialists and the best flight connectivity in the country.
The trade-off is distance: five to six hours from the US east coast, longer from Canada, which makes casual return trips less practical than Mexico.
How to actually decide
Complexity and return frequency matter more than country. Simple work close to home. Complex work where the specialist expertise is, accepting you will travel back once or twice.
In every one of these countries the clinic you choose matters vastly more than the flag it operates under.
There is no best country. There are good and poor clinics in all of them, and the verification questions you should ask are identical regardless of destination.
