Someone considering implants at sixty is really asking whether this will last the rest of their life. The honest answer involves separating two different things.
The implant and the crown are not the same lifespan
The implant itself, the part in the bone, has documented survival above ninety per cent at ten years and continues to do well beyond that. Many placed in the 1980s remain in function.
The crown or bridge on top is a different matter. Expect that to need attention or replacement at some point, commonly in the ten to twenty year range. That is normal and considerably less involved than replacing the implant.
What determines your odds
Gum health, smoking, diabetes control and whether you grind. Those four account for most of the variation between patients, and three of them are modifiable.
Peri-implantitis is the main long-term threat, and it correlates strongly with a history of gum disease. If you have had periodontitis, this changes your maintenance schedule rather than your candidacy.
The arithmetic at sixty
If the implant serves twenty-five years and needs a new crown once in that period, that is a reasonable expectation on current evidence, and it covers the period most people are asking about.
Compare it against the alternative: a bridge with a median survival around ten years, requiring replacement two or three times over the same interval, with the risk of losing a supporting tooth each time.
Designing for the long term
Prosthetic design should account for how you will clean it in fifteen years, when dexterity and eyesight may differ. Screw-retained restorations that can be removed for servicing are frequently preferable to cemented ones for this reason.
This is worth raising explicitly, because it is rarely discussed at the planning stage.
For most healthy sixty-year-olds, implants are a reasonable long-term investment. The maintenance schedule matters more than the initial placement in determining whether that holds true.
