Categorising what can go wrong
Minor issues predominate: a high bite requiring adjustment, a loosened screw, a provisional restoration that debonds, localised discomfort. These are common, expected, and generally resolvable in a short appointment.
Significant complications are less frequent but must be planned for: implant failure to integrate, infection, fracture of a definitive restoration, or a prosthesis requiring remake.
What can be handled remotely
A considerable proportion of concerns are resolvable through review of photographs and radiographs supplied by the patient, sometimes in conjunction with a local dentist performing a specific adjustment.
Any clinic treating international patients should offer structured remote review as a matter of course, with a defined response time.
What requires physical attendance
Remakes, surgical revision and any work involving the implant itself require attendance. The relevant questions are therefore: who bears the cost of the treatment, over what period, and who bears the cost of travel.
Practices differ legitimately in their answers. What is not legitimate is declining to state the answer in advance.
Arrangements with a local practitioner
Identifying a dentist at home willing to provide adjustments and routine maintenance, before treatment commences, materially reduces the practical consequence of minor complications.
Provision of complete records, including the implant system used, supports this arrangement and should be requested at the conclusion of treatment.
Obtain the warranty terms, the remote review arrangement and the position on travel costs in writing before booking. A practice experienced with international patients will supply all three without difficulty.
