In larger practices, the clinician conducting the initial consultation is frequently not the clinician performing the surgery. This is a normal division of labour, and the patient is nonetheless entitled to know who does what.
The roles involved in an implant case
A complete case may involve a surgeon placing the implants, a prosthodontist or restorative dentist designing and fitting the prosthesis, a dental technician fabricating it, and a coordinator managing scheduling.
The distribution of these roles across individuals varies between practices, and none of the possible arrangements is inherently superior.
What should be established
The identity and qualification of the clinician performing the surgical phase, and of the clinician responsible for the prosthetic phase. Whether the laboratory work is undertaken in-house or externally.
Which clinician the patient will see for adjustments and review, and who assumes responsibility should remedial work prove necessary.
Why continuity matters prosthetically
The aesthetic and occlusal outcome depends substantially on communication between the clinician who assessed the patient and the technician who fabricates the restoration. Where the chain includes multiple handovers, the quality of documentation becomes correspondingly more important.
This is one reason standardised photographic records and digital files are more than administrative overhead.
Framing the question
The enquiry is routine in any surgical context and should be presented as such. A practice with defined roles will answer readily; difficulty in obtaining an answer is itself informative.
Ask who performs each phase and record the answer. Continuity of responsibility is a legitimate consideration in selecting a provider, particularly where follow-up will occur at a distance.
